I’m so proud of my DST @bmacdst1987 line sister Charlene Hough for working to offer this program to the students. I had the best student ambassador today. I showed the students how a book report relates to a news report. 🍲To blend or not to blend? That is the question😋. I'm stressing again so that means I'm stress cooking. I'm making a batch of Panera-style Broccoli Cheddar Soup. How do you like yours, smooth or chunky?

LIIISSSTTEEENNN in the past two years I've been inundated by parents from all over asking for help with their journalism seniors.

When I ask the basic:
*Where have they interned?
*What campus news orgs are they involved in?

All I get are excuses.

I understand the parents' desperation, but at this point it's too late. Go ahead and fill out a grad school application OR work your network of GOOD friends and hook them up with an entry level job and stress the importance of LEARNING everything possible. Entry level SHOULD mean no experience, but it does NOT.

🪖Happy Veterans Day. I've worked with so many veterans in this #JournoLife, so I wanted to show my students how military service people use their skills in journalism. S/o to James H. Egbert for talking with my George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs (@smpagwu) students about his career and and approach to photojournalism.
James is a veteran photojournalist with a career spanning nearly 30 years. Egbert got his start in the U.S. Navy as a public affairs officer and mass communications specialist. He served the U.S. Navy active duty and reserve status for 25 years. This is where he cultivated an appreciation for journalism and photography.

This week's "5 Things to Know for Friday" class email centered mental health.

Teaching is one of the jobs that I'm really passionate about right now. As you can imagine this has been a rollercoaster week for many of my #JournoLife college students. I didn't want to force a conversation on #Election2024, but I did want to let them know that I'm here if they want to talk.

Too often we ignore the impact of news stories on journalists. This is NOT healthy🥺. I personally have a standing monthly therapy session and many times I'm STILL unpacking things from years ago. So as a college lecturer that literally just did an entire lesson on reporting breaking news with empathy, I had to offer space for the students to open up of they need an adult to talk too. I also advised them to center their mental health right now. I may not be Elmo or Steve from "Blues Clues," but I get it🙏🏾.

I wear many hats serving as editor-at-large. This includes host, video producer/editor and graphic designer. I'm most proud of the DNC and election night story art. Notice the DNC shows VP Kamala Harris is in the front with her supporters in the background, while the election night image shows the statewide and local Black women winners with the VP in the background. My thought process was the supportive nature of Black women. We make space for US to shine. .

Twas the day after Halloween = hey class, wanna he

Twas the day after Halloween = hey class, wanna hear a scary story? So I told my @smpagwu #JournoLife students about that time I ran for my life because some guy rammed a truck into our station and then barricaded himself in an edit suite with a backpack and possibly a machete, talking about he's God and here to "purify the multiverse." Coincidentally one of my stories that night was how to escape a burning building. I use this for a breaking news exercise to stress the importance of empathy when interviewing people in traumatic situations. The shock 😲 on their faces when I revealed I was in this hot mess situation was worth the lesson planning hours.

🎃🎃Year #2 Halloween in my new house 🏠. I was so excited to hand out candy to trick or treaters again. This year I got 12 costume wearing visitors. That's up from 10 last year 😆. The Addams Family was the most popular. I pretty much worked on my lesson plans and got in some grading while I waited for the trick or treaters.
